The most common issues we see at ProGrin Dental are bacteria related. We encourage the use of specific take-home products, but often times our patients like to go a more holistic route. We have several DIY essential oils that we recommend to rid the mouth of bacteria, protect against plaque, and even reduce pain. Here are some of our top suggestions for DIY Essential Oils:
Tea Tree Oil
The tea tree oil is packed with antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiprotozoal properties and can be added into your home care routine. Read more about the history of the tea tree on Dr. Brite’s website. This amazing plant is used in everything from shampoo to acne medication and we rate it at the top of our list for natural home remedies. DIY Essential Oil instructions:
- Simply rub it directly on the infected gums or use a carrier oil like coconut oil to dilute depending on your sensitivity level.
- Dilute with water and swish in a glass for about 60 seconds
Clove oil is recommended by Colgate to reduce inflammation and provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Although it has a bitter taste, the effect on the gums is remarkable. Eugenol is a natural chemical found in this plant that was used to treat all sorts of ailments before modern medicine.
- Apply directly to the gums or with carrier oil
